When deciding on a coil size and legnth your going to want to include 2 things the amperage/voltage you will be using and the legnth of the pulse.

For finding the right awg of wire you want go find a magnetwire manufacturer that you are interested in ordering from with good prices. Try to find a datasheet on what amperages thier wire can carry indefently.

Lets say we will be expecting 4000amps from our source power supply and a awg10 wire can carry 200amps continuously, so that is continuously we want to find how much it can hold for just the short amount of the time and without getting heated to where the coil can burn up. And looking at a datasheet on the magnetwire manufacturer I see that at 2ms it can withstand 4000amps and our pulse most likely will be below 1ms so this is ok.

Ok now for finding the legnth of the pulse.
